ENGLISH ARTICLES (a,an,the)
An article is a word that combines with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. An article is sometimes called a noun marker also.
There is two types of article:
1) Indefinite ( a,an): Indefinite article refer to something not specially known to the person you are communicating with. There are only used before a singular countable noun.
2)Definite (the): Definite article used to point out some particular person or thing. "The" is used before a singular or plural noun, whether countable or uncountable, when that noun is specially identified or its identity is already understood.
It means there are just three articles in English - a, an and the.
USAGE OF A:
☺ Article a is used before a consonant for example - a boy, a bird, a rose etc.
☺ It is also used before such vowels that have sound of "you" for example - a university, a European etc.
☺ a is used When "O" sound lik "W" , for example - such a one, a one- eyed man etc.
USAGE OF AN :
☺ Article an is used before a vowels (a,e,i,o,u) like an eye, an idiot, an idea etc.
☺It is also used before a consonant beginning with a vowel sound like an honest man, an M.A., an hour etc.
USAGE OF THE :
☺ DEFINITE article the is used when we know that the listener knows or can work out what particular person or thing we are talking about. For example - The apple you eat was rotten.
☺ We use the when we have already mentioned the things we are talking about .
For example: She has got two children, a boy and a girl.
The girl is eight and the boy is fourteen.
☺ We use the to talk about geographical point on the globe .
Example: The North Pole, the equator etc.
☺ We use the to talk about rivers, ocean ans seas.
Example: The Ganga, the Pacific etc.
☺ We use the before certain nouns when we know there is only one of the particular thing.
Example: The rain, the sun, the earth , the wind etc.
